The Dayara Bugyal Trek is widely considered one of the easiest and safest high-altitude treks in the Himalayas, making it highly recommended for beginners, families, and first-time high-altitude hikers. It requires a moderate fitness level but no technical climbing skills.

Difficulty Breakdown

  • Terrain: Well-defined paths, gentle gradients, and soft alpine meadows. There are no exposed ridges or sheer drops.
  • Altitude: You start at roughly 7,500 ft (Raithal) and reach a maximum altitude of around 11,830 ft (Dayara Top). Altitude sickness is mild, though mild breathlessness is expected.
  • Fitness Required: You should be able to jog 5 km in about 40 minutes.
  • Winter Warning: While easy in spring/summer, the difficulty spikes significantly in winter (Dec–Feb) due to snow, sub-zero temperatures, and slippery trails.

Day-Wise Itinerary & Difficulty

Day 1: Dehradun to Raithal (Base Camp)
Distance/Time: 180 km drive (6–7 hours)
Altitude: 7,500 ft
Effort Level: Very Easy. It is purely a travel day through winding mountain roads. You will rest at a guesthouse in Raithal village to acclimatize.

Day 2: Raithal to Gui Campsite Distance/Time: ~5 km trek (4–5 hours)Altitude: 7,500 ft to 10,400 ft

Effort Level: Moderate. This is the steepest day of the trek. The first kilometer out of the village is a relentless uphill climb, then gives way to a gradual walk through beautiful oak and rhododendron forests.

Day 3: Gui Campsite to Chilapada Distance/Time: ~4 km trek (3 hours)Altitude: 10,400 ft to 10,500 ft

Effort Level: Easy. This is a short, relaxed acclimatization walk. The trail continues through dense forests with very little altitude gain, leaving you with the afternoon to rest.

Day 4: Chilapada to Dayara Bugyal Top and return to Barnala. Distance/Time: ~7–8 km trek (6–7 hours)

Altitude: 10,500 ft to 11,830 ft (Dayara Top) to 9,500 ft (Barnala)

Effort Level: Moderate. The ascent from Chilapada to Dayara Top is gradual, taking you out of the tree line and onto massive, rolling alpine meadows. The thin air at 11,800 ft makes breathing a bit heavier, but the flat meadow paths make it manageable. You will then descend to the Barnala campsite for the night.

Day 5: Barnala to Raithal, then drive to Dehradun. Distance/Time: 3–4 km trek (2 hours) + 180 km drive (6-7 hours)

Altitude: 9,500 ft to 7,500 ft (Raithal)

Effort Level: Easy. It is entirely a downhill walk back to the base camp at Raithal, followed by the drive back to Dehradun.
